In 2007, a deep sea salvage company, Odyssey Marine Exploration, discovered over 500,000 coins on a ship wreck off the coast of Portugal.
The ship was the Spanish vessel, Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, and had been sunk by the British in 1804.
The gold and silver coins on board were valued at nearly $500 million! Spain claimed that they retained ownership of the Nuestra Senora while Odyssey Marine Exploration said they had a right to the cargo.
In 2012, a US judge ruled in Spain's favor and ordered Odyssey to return the ship's cargo to it's home country. The salvage company tried to appeal the ruling, but their appeals were rejected by the US Supreme Court. They said they would abide by the ruling but that it went against the law.
